Be Your Own Fitness Friend

Be Your Own Fitness Friend

What’s the No.1 enemy of your fitness goals?

Let’s talk about the absolute biggest roadblock standing in your way.

There are so many to choose from like not having enough time, lack of support, not knowing what to do, Pizza, and the list goes on and on. What if we say that none of those obstacles are in fact preventing you from reaching your goals? Yes, seriously! Drumroll… the No.1 thing standing in between you and your goals is… YOU.

“Know that you are your greatest enemy, but also your greatest friend.” – Jeremy Taylor.

We get in our own way in so many ways. Here’s how.

  • You haven't prioritized achieving your goals. This means that when you're stressed, tired, or just plain bored, you give up on your healthy habits and let them fall by the wayside.
  • You haven’t set yourself up for success. You lack a strategy. Without a plan, support system, or accountability, it's easy to get discouraged and give up.
  • You believe you lack the necessary willpower. Everybody has moments when they have difficulty making a long-term commitment to fitness. But when you know why your goal matters to you, it’s easier to overcome those struggles.
  • A single "slip" can derail you. Get up, dust yourself off, and figure out what went wrong so you can get back to your routine.

These are just a few of the ways in which you could be sabotaging yourself. There are dozens more.

Devise a way to stay accountable

But… knowing yourself and being aware of the ways that you tend to get in your own way, will help you to become even stronger. Accountability is a necessary component of success, and it is frequently the factor that has the greatest impact on a person's life. Accountability has been the most important factor in many of our clients' successes.

Your mindset makes all the difference

It is always the mind, not the body that fails first. The likelihood of engaging in regular exercise and consuming a healthy diet decreases dramatically if you lack motivation. Take time to reflect on why you started working out in the first place. Don't be afraid to be brutally honest with yourself. Was it solely to conform to a societally-approved standard of beauty that you began exercising, or was it to improve your health and live longer and free of lifestyle-related diseases? What would happen if the next time you sabotaged yourself, you took some real time to think about the reasons why – without beating yourself up for it? Take some real time to analyze and explore it – whether you do it by journaling, working with a fitness coach, or talking with a friend or mentor, can help you reconnect with the reasons your goals matter to you. When your mindset is right, you can overcome just about any obstacle that is blocking your way.

Take a breather

“I have not failed; I successfully found ways not to make a light bulb.” – Thomas Edison

There will always be successes, failures, and wins. Your progress will naturally slow down as time goes on because it's impossible to maintain that upward curve you had when you first started out. You, and only you, are in charge of how you respond.
